As a society, we often hear about weight loss challenges and transformations, but what really happens beyond the numbers? What’s the real impact on someone’s life when they lose weight? I had the chance to experience this firsthand when I participated in a 90-day weight loss challenge called “Beyond the Scale.” Here are my personal observations about how weight loss changed my life during that period:
1. Mind over Body
Before the challenge, I would often get caught up in cravings and indulging in unhealthy snack options. I would find myself going to bed feeling guilty about the food choices I had made that day. With Beyond the Scale, I learned to focus on healthy choices and avoiding foods that would hinder my progress. Through the power of my mind to focus and stay disciplined, I learned that I had more control over my cravings and indulgences than I thought possible.
2. Confidence
Losing weight quickly improved my confidence – not simply because I looked better in the mirror, but because I accomplished something that I had previously seen as daunting and challenging. I now knew that I could set goals for myself and achieve them. This newfound confidence has helped me in other areas of my life outside of weight loss.
3. Improved Mental Health
During my Beyond the Scale challenge, I experienced a significant improvement in my mental health. Exercising became somewhat of a release for me and I was able to separate my thoughts from my stressors at home and from work. By channelling my energy into something that was good for me, I became more focused and clearer mentally. Additionally, since exercise promotes endorphin production, I just generally felt happier.
4. Better Sleep
Another unexpected benefit was the improvement in my overall sleep quality. I was able to get a full night’s rest without constantly waking up. This change in my sleep patterns helped me to function better throughout the day, increasing my productivity at work.
5. Community Support
The Beyond the Scale challenge was a group challenge in which we were put into teams to lose weight together. This sense of community increased support and motivation during my weight loss journey. I no longer felt like I was on this journey alone, and it sparked friendly competition between all of the teams, which made the challenge even more enjoyable.
At the end of the 90-day challenge, I had lost over 25 pounds. More importantly, though, I had gained so many benefits beyond the numbers on the scale. My goal was to be healthier, and I accomplished it in ways I hadn’t even imagined. Beyond the Scale changed my life in countless ways, showing me just how much potential I had for happiness and health when I put my mind to it.
