Losing Weight can Help Reduce Cholesterol Levels, Study Finds

Losing weight has been linked with a multitude of health benefits, and a recent study has added one more to the list – reducing cholesterol levels. After six months, the group that lost weight through calorie restriction had a significant reduction in their total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and triglycerides, compared to the control group. Additionally, the calorie-restricted group had an increase in HDL (good) cholesterol, which is associated with a decreased risk of heart disease.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Kevin Hall, notes that the results suggest that shedding excess pounds can be an effective way to lower cholesterol levels, even without the use of medications. “This is a message of hope,” he says, “that it is possible to manage and reverse the adverse effects of excess weight and obesity.”

The findings of this study are particularly important since high cholesterol is a common risk factor for heart disease and stroke, two of the leading causes of death worldwide. Additionally, high cholesterol can be difficult to manage through medication alone, as many people struggle with adherence to prescription drugs or experience side effects.
